Semester 3 Proposal

For the final semester I've decided to take my work in a possibly an unusual direction.
In terms of the evolution of my work, it makes sense to tackle this next project the way I am. I could just as easily do another remake, but why do that when I can do a demake...

The same principles apply, but due to the topic being a fairly new concept, there isnt a great deal of other titles to take inspiration from. This would allow me to really dive into more research, to really see if my idealisms translate past just remakes and remasters.

With this in mind I could effectively demake just about any game. Instead im going to further my previous work even moreso by attempting a game that has already officially received its own remaster.

So, previously I've done a remaster of Rush 2049, then a much more in depth remake of Silent Hill 1.

Next I will demake The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker in the style of Nintendo 64

I chose this for numerous reasons:
  1. Because I've already done a remake & remaster
  2. A demake would turn the whole premise onto its head; would the ideologies still be similar?
  3. Windwaker has already officially be remastered, would it still be as good as a demake?
  4. It's one of the franchises most beloved entries
  5. Lots of people loved Breath of the Wild 2: Trailer Demake

A bit of insight into my decision; I was initially going to do another remake, to simply drive home my original statement about some remasters in the industry. It wasn't until discussing with my peers their opinions on my work when it was brought to my atttention the niche world of demakes and it suddenly just clicked.

Demakes are purely nostalgia driven, as gameplay trumps graphical fidelity anyday (in my opinion). A lot of gamers have huge amount of nostalgia for specific gaming generations, primarily those in which they grew up with. Being able to play a modern title as if it was created generations ago is somewhat of a dream, only recently being realised as a reality.

By encorperating a demake into my overall project, it gives me even more room to expand and explore the world of remakes. Like for example would similar time restraints affect a demake in the same way, is there more or less work involved in a demake, do modern mechancis belong in an older generation game, is notalgia the sole drive for this genre.

At any rate, a demake is akin to a remake; they're one and the same just going different directions in time. As such should be fully subjectable to similar scrutiny in regards to the gaming industry as a whole.
