I've been working on my project at a steady pace whilst also balancing
the theory side of things. Surprisingly I managed to find some academic papers
directly related to my question! Took me a while, I think I was looking too much
into nostalgia and that's why I didn’t find anything on remakes.
- Video Game Remakes and Remasters Refute Retranslation
- Serialization, remaking, nostalgia. The case of Xbox Live Arcade
- The Past as the Future? Nostalgia and Retrogaming in Digital Culture
- Nostalgia Videogames as Playable Game Criticism
Whilst I
need to put more time aside to read them all thoroughly, the abstracts indicate
they relate to what I want to research.
Project-wise,
the level is now halfway in terms of basic construction:
It's
starting to look nice, even though it’s still somewhat crowded the level has
better optimisation and cleaner models. Eventually once I've textured everything,
it should look really sweet.
Additionally, I've coded coin functionality into the game as well as the corresponding UI components. So the player can now collect the coins, they count towards their totals and the UI reflects this.

Although
in hindsight, I wish I'd have picked something a bit more simpler to 'remake'
such as a small side-scroller etc. If I do manage to get to the point of
attempting another project before the course finished, I think I will look at
Tombi. It’s much smaller in scope and still encompasses the same ideologies I associate
with this current project.
